How has your awareness of the food you waste changed since you started separating it from other trash? Did anything surprise you?

I hardly have any trash since I started composting. My family is really conscientious about waste, but all of the peels and cores, etc., go into the compost bin. They really add up!

What food items do you prefer buying from a farmers market than a grocery store? Why?

I love the fall and going to farmers markets. We recently went to an orchard and bought several different types of squash. We have been using them for side dishes.

Have you previously learned about what food is still safe to eat if a portion of it goes bad? Who taught you this information?

I have learned what food is safe but I am really terrible at remembering to try and eat the food before it goes bad. I would like to be better at using food before it goes bad.

What meal plan method works for you and why? Have you tried some in the past that didn't work?

I took the quiz and got flexible planner which is what I already do. I didn't realize that was a meal planning option. I thought meal planning was just done on one day for the week or the month which I tried and never worked for me. It was nice to learn there are other options and received tools to help me.

Are you someone who typically chooses what you buy based on what is on sale? How can you make sure you don't buy more than what you need?

Never trust a sale on face value. Most 2 for 1 deals will give you that price on just 1 item if you don't need both.

How will you volunteer your time? What was your experience like volunteering and what did you learn?

I volunteer as a food repack lead at second harvest heartland. It's a great way to get food out into the community.

Do you have days when you don't have time to spend making food? How has meal prep helped one those days?

Most weekdays I don't have any motivation in the morning to prep lunch - it has been working out really well to have a stash of pre-parsed out meals in the freezer. Having something healthy and tasty that I can just grab quickly has kept me from (guiltily) eating out for lunch! It's a lot of work (time) on the front end, but I think it's worth it so far. I'm also trying to get better at making overnight oats before going to bed so that I have a similarly hearty/tasty breakfast waiting for me, but I don't always remember.

We make a list before going to the grocery store to plan at least 4-5 meals for the week. We also just started having a day where we make something from the pantry only to use up all the misc boxes and bags.

I made broth from leftovers from a rotisserie chicken I bought at Costco!
