Would you be more willing to buy produce with a few imperfections at your grocery store? Why or why not?

Yes! This is an idea I wasn't previously open to because I thought produce had to be "perfect" to be good to eat. I had a conversation with a community member who shared with me the idea that the idea of "perfect" food is not how things grow naturally. It's still taking some adjustment to getting used to buying things that have imperfections or using the items in a bag/bundle that have imperfections, but I am definitely making progress on it!

What food items do you prefer buying from a farmers market than a grocery store? Why?

I prefer buying produce from the farmers market! Not only do I know the produce is locally grown but I also have the opportunity to learn more about vegetables that are new to me. This weekend while I was at my city's farmers market I wanted to buy cauliflower. One of the farmers was selling what I thought was purple cauliflower which I enjoy, but I learned from the farmer that it was actually purple broccoli! I had it for dinner with zucchini also purchased at the farmers market. The leftovers have been great to add to my lunch this week!

When I know I'm probably not going to finish my produce on time (in this case, apples), I should make more of an effort to give them to my friends.

Great idea! I should do this too because sometimes produce is sold in larger quantities than I will eat so it's a great idea to share with friends.

Or maybe make a quick apple crisp or cook it on the stop top to make a quick apple sauce.

What did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?

Dips (like guac or hummus). I could completely finish the one I'm on and wait a few days to see if I still want the dip before buying another.

To meal prep for the week, I made a large batch of curry (most servings I froze) to eat with brown rice.

What are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?

Some things I typically buy that are not on my list are snacks, drinks, or small items that catch my attention while I am shopping. These purchases may seem inexpensive at the time, but they can add up. I could limit them by making a clear shopping list and sticking to it, setting a budget before I shop, and asking myself whether I really need an item before buying it.

Did you know that not all food labeling means the same thing? How have you changed your habits to decide if food is still safe to eat?

I learned a lot from the sites and the video provided in the learn more. And I honestly didn't know the difference between the food labels, but now that I do I will rely much more on my nose and eyes to determine if an item is still safe to consume after its best by date which marks freshness

Do you have days when you don't have time to spend making food? How has meal prep helped one those days?

Yes, there are days when I do not have a lot of time to make food. When those days come, it's good that I meal prepped because I am able to quickly grabbed a nutritious meal. The meal prep prevents me from ordering out or just eating snacks.
