Vivien's actions
Planning
Keep a Food Inventory
I will take a fridge and pantry inventory to stay up to date with what I have at home before I go grocery shopping.
Storage
Preserve food
I will try a new method of food preservation, such as canning, pickling, drying or making jam. I will try 1 preservation techniques.
Community
Keep all food out of the garbage
In addition to using up my edible food, I will separate and compost my food scraps using backyard composting, curbside pickup, or a drop-off program.
Shopping
Scrutinize Deals
I will resist the suggestion to buy the quantity advertised on sale and only buy what I know I will eat.
Storage
Make Smoothies
I will freeze fruits and veggies, such as overripe bananas or avocados, to use later in smoothies.
Cooking
Revive Limp Produce
I will rescue limp produce like leafy greens or carrots by soaking them in cold water or using them in recipes where appearance doesn't matter.
Shopping
Buy From A Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat directly from a local farmers market and make 2 meals.

Vivien Fowler 10/13/2026 4:43 PMThis past week, I started portioning and freezing large packs of meat and produce into single or double servings, removing the pressure to use them within 48 hours. -
Vivien Fowler 10/12/2026 5:02 PMI started to use the "Anchor + Versatile" rule, i.e., I would purchase 2-3 anchor items (a main protein) and 3-4 versatile, long-lasting produce items (such as carrots, cabbage, pepper or spinach) that work across multiple meal types (soup, stir-fry, or wrap). -
Vivien Fowler 10/11/2026 3:41 PMI feel that cutting back on restaurant meals and takeout in favor of home-cooked food and leftovers not only eliminates waste, but it definitely saves money. ✨ -
Vivien Fowler 10/10/2026 9:27 AMThis challenge has motivated me to read more, so I just borrowed "The Waste-Free Kitchen Handbook" by Dana Gunders and I’m looking forward to diving into it this weekend! -
Vivien Fowler 10/09/2026 7:41 PMI tend to buy produce just because it's on sale. However, over the past nine days, I’ve been planning meals ahead of time, sticking to my grocery list, and buying less. As a result, my fridge is much emptier and far more organized. Fingers crossed I can keep this going! 🤞-
Yasmine Chihi 10/10/2026 10:01 AMThis is great! I have also been planning my meals and it has helped me be efficient in getting out of the store in less time and reducing waste nice job!

Vivien Fowler 10/07/2026 4:57 PMToday I decided to cook double portions of shrimp scampi linguini with left over vegetables so I've zero-effort lunches ready for work in the next two days. -
Vivien Fowler 10/06/2026 5:12 PMSince this challenge, I started shorter buying cycles of every 2-3-days instead of 7-days and in smaller quantity -- hoping to reduce produce spoilage compared to massive weekly hauls. -
Vivien Fowler 10/05/2026 6:36 PMThis evening, I realized my fridge looks emptier than it did before starting the challenge. That's because I've been buying what I need and using up all my leftovers before cooking new meals. -
Vivien Fowler 10/04/2026 9:43 AMParticipating in this challenge has made me much more mindful about using what I already have and buying only essential perishables.
