Angela's actions
Community
Get Social
I will share information about saving food and the actions that I am taking on social media.
Planning
Track My Wasted Food
I will track the food that my household of 2 throws out so I can learn what we're wasting and why.
Storage
Befriend My Freezer
I will freeze leftover food items or meals for later. The freezer is my food-waste-reduction friend!
Community
Watch a Documentary About Food
I will watch 1 videos or documentaries to learn about the scope and scale of food waste in this country.
Planning
Learn About Portion Sizes
I will observe how much my family members eat and learn how many portions will match our life stages and appetites.
Storage
Deciphering Date Labels
I will learn about food labels and not throw food out just based on the date on the package, but instead check the smell and color to see if it has gone bad.
Planning
Sign up for Fridge Check Fridays
I will sign up for Fridge Check Friday emails, sent by Hennepin County but open to everyone, to prompt me to check my fridge for food that needs to be used up and for hacks on storing food to keep it fresh.
Planning
Find your meal planning personality
I will explore different meal plan techniques and choose one that works for my household.
Shopping
Scrutinize Deals
I will resist the suggestion to buy the quantity advertised on sale and only buy what I know I will eat.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStorageDo a bit of research about foods that freeze and revive well. What can you put in the freezer that you didn't know you could?
Angela Dahlstrom 10/13/2026 1:31 PMI have multiple houseplants and often use BTI tea for my plants. I had 6 gallons made and ended up only using 3 gallons. It is on the spendy side so I did not want to waste it and found out I can freeze the BTI tea and then thaw and use the next watering. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingReflecting on how your grocery trips have gone in the past: do you fill up your cart? Do you think you can fit everything you need into a smaller cart or a basket?
Angela Dahlstrom 10/13/2026 1:28 PMI find I need to write and follow a list, otherwise I tend to grab impulse items that I don't necessarily need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningWhat did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?
Angela Dahlstrom 10/12/2026 8:30 AMI often times purchase salad, thinking it is a healthy purchase and I will eat it, but find once I am home that is the least eaten food, and often end up throwing it away. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingAre you someone who typically chooses what you buy based on what is on sale? How can you make sure you don't buy more than what you need?
Angela Dahlstrom 10/12/2026 8:29 AMMy first impulse is to buy in bulk, but I have found more often than not that leads to waste by perishable food not being consumed on time. I have been more aware that does not save money and am purchasing only what I need.-
Jenny Kedward 10/12/2026 9:24 AMTotally! If I find that the bulk purchase for fruits and veggies is still cheaper, I'll give away the extras to neighbors or family.

Angela Dahlstrom 10/08/2026 9:31 AMI am working on organizing fridge and freezer to bring oldest to front of fridge and freezer and new behind so it reduces freezer burn and moldy fridge food that I have to throw away. -
Angela Dahlstrom 9/14/2026 8:50 AMI have enjoyed this challenge each time it comes up I try to get better about purchasing, storing and using food in a timely manner.
