Eat Before Shopping
I will resist impulse buys by eating a snack or meal before going grocery shopping. Those who grocery shop on an empty stomach spend 64% more than not-hungry shoppers.
Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will only purchase the items on my grocery list and avoid impulse purchases.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.
Shopping
Source Local Foods
I will buy locally grown food from my grocery store and make 1 meal(s).
Shopping
Scrutinize Deals
I will resist the suggestion to buy the quantity advertised on sale and only buy what I know I will eat.
Shopping
Glean or Forage
I will learn about the foods that grow locally and try gleaning or foraging.

REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingWhat are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?
Rana Campbell-Beams 10/02/2026 5:53 AMI'm notorious for impulse-buying snacks. If I have a snack before I go shopping I may find the snack aisle less tempting. Using a list keeps me on task (and usually out of the snack food aisle). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingWhat can you do to make sure you never shop hungry?
Rana Campbell-Beams 10/02/2026 5:51 AMGrab a non-sugary snack like a banana or cheese, or a beverage like milk or a smoothie before heading out to shop.
