Planning
Try a Food Tracking App
I will download and use an app that helps me track and manage my food.
Storage
Properly Store Avocados
I will allow green, unripe avocados to ripen on the counter then transfer them to the refrigerator. Once cut, I will keep the pit in and rub the avocado with lemon or oil to reduce browning. I will properly store 2 avocados.
Community
Get Social
I will share information about saving food and the actions that I am taking on social media.
Planning
Create a Weekly Meal Plan
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu of meals and ingredients for my household of 2.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.
Shopping
Buy From A Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat directly from a local farmers market and make 2 meals.
Kids
Visit a Farm
I will visit a local pizza farm, teaching farm, or CSA grower to educate myself and my children on farm-to-table concepts.
Cooking
Make Soup Broth
I will store vegetable scraps or bones in my freezer and use them to make veggie stock or bone broth. I will make 2 batches.
Cooking
Swap This for That
If I am missing an ingredient for a recipe I will find a substitute I have on hand and use that instead.
Storage
Preserve food
I will try a new method of food preservation, such as canning, pickling, drying or making jam. I will try 1 preservation techniques.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money? How has meal planning helped you avoid waste?
sophia amaris 10/01/2026 12:48 PMthat is a lot of money to just be thrown in the trash. it does kind of surprise me but at the same time for a family of four it's not something that seems very unrealistic. i would rather use this money on clothes or put it into my savings.
meal planning avoids waste by measuring and reusing.... my family does this such as when we make chicken at the beginning of the week, we then continue to use that chicken to make other meals and then eat leftovers.
