"My mission is to waste less food by eating leftovers and only making the amount of food we need. My family also buys too much food sometimes, like bread, and we end up throwing it away because it expires before we can eat it. I want us to only shop for what we need so less food gets wasted."

Shopping
Stick to Your Grocery List
I will only purchase the items on my grocery list and avoid impulse purchases.
Planning
Track My Wasted Food
I will track the food that my household of 3 throws out so I can learn what we're wasting and why.
Planning
Sign up for Fridge Check Fridays
I will sign up for Fridge Check Friday emails, sent by Hennepin County but open to everyone, to prompt me to check my fridge for food that needs to be used up and for hacks on storing food to keep it fresh.
Shopping
Eat Before Shopping
I will resist impulse buys by eating a snack or meal before going grocery shopping. Those who grocery shop on an empty stomach spend 64% more than not-hungry shoppers.
Shopping
Skip the Cart
Bigger carts make us feel like we need to fill them! Use a hand basket to improve grocery store discipline and prevent over-purchasing.
Shopping
Buy Loose Produce and Shop the Bulk Bins
I will buy loose produce or food from the bulk section to get the exact quantity I need, instead of buying pre-packed quantities.
Storage
Learn About Food Storage
I will learn about food storage and store food based on best practices to keep it from spoiling before it is used.
Storage
Create an Eat First Area
I will create an "Eat First" area in my fridge to prioritize food that needs to be used right away for my household of 3.
Kids
Visit a Farm
I will visit a local pizza farm, teaching farm, or CSA grower to educate myself and my children on farm-to-table concepts.
Community
Watch a Documentary About Food
I will watch 2 videos or documentaries to learn about the scope and scale of food waste in this country.

REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingHow has buying bulk impacted the amount of food you waste?
Iftin Abdi 10/04/2026 6:11 PMI can buy loose produce so I only get what my family needs and waste less food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingReflecting on how your grocery trips have gone in the past: do you fill up your cart? Do you think you can fit everything you need into a smaller cart or a basket?
Iftin Abdi 10/04/2026 6:08 PMIn the past, my family usually filled up the cart and bought more than we needed. I think we can use a smaller cart and only buy what we know we will eat.-
Laquieta Brooks 10/04/2026 9:05 PMI use to do the same years ago. But now I am more mindful of what I eat and buying only the necessary food. The smaller carts are my go to as well. Great job!

REFLECTION QUESTIONPlanningWhat did you find you are tossing the most? How can you change your habits to avoid wasting this food?
Iftin Abdi 10/04/2026 6:05 PMI found that we throw away leftovers and expired food like bread, milk, juice, vegetables, and fruits the most. I can change this by eating leftovers and only buying enough food that my family can finish before it expires. -
Iftin Abdi 10/04/2026 5:45 PMI’m trying to waste less food by eating leftovers instead of throwing them away. I also encourage my family to finish the food we already have before cooking more. This can help us build a better habit and waste less food. -
Iftin Abdi 10/01/2026 4:32 PMEveryone in my house often cooks their meals and we often end up wasting 3 different meals but this week's goal is to all of us cook one meal we all enjoy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONShoppingWhat are some of the things you typically buy that you weren't on your list? How do you think you might limit some of those purchases?
